Why You Should Get the Dental Crown You Need Before 2020 Ends

At your last checkup, your dentist said that one of your teeth has a significant crack in it. They highly suggested that you get a dental crown to protect it. You never got around to scheduling that procedure because you were worried that it would be too expensive. However, not getting a dental crown when you need one can actually end up costing you more money in the long run. Continue reading to learn how getting the crown you need before the end of 2020 can save you time, money, and painful dental problems in the future.

What Happens If You Don’t Get a Dental Crown When You Need One?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap, usually made of porcelain or ceramic, that fits over a tooth to restore its function, structure, and appearance. More often than not, your dentist will recommend one when a tooth has sustained serious damage or decay.

If your dentist has said you should get a dental crown, you should get that taken care of as soon as you can. Leaving your tooth unprotected exposes it to harmful bacteria that could lead to an infection in the center of the tooth. Not only can this be excruciatingly painful, but it may require more complex treatments like root canal therapy or a tooth extraction, both of which cost more than a dental crown.

Does Dental Insurance Cover the Cost of Dental Crowns?

If you’re getting a dental crown for more than just cosmetic reasons, your dental insurance company will likely consider it a major restorative procedure. Therefore, they will typically cover about 50% of the cost.

Keep in mind that even if you’re responsible for half of the cost, getting a dental crown is worth the investment. Paying for a dental crown now will save you so much money and discomfort down the road.

Why Should I Get My Dental Crown Before 2020 Ends?

Like any dental treatment, if you need a dental crown, you should get it before the year ends. By now, you have likely met your deductible but not your annual maximum. If your insurance policy resets at the end of the calendar year, any unused money on your annual maximum will expire. Waiting until 2021 could mean you’ll have to pay more since your deductible will also be reset. If you haven’t reached your annual maximum yet, it’s a good idea to get any necessary dental procedures taken care of before the end of 2020.

No matter the time of year, you should never avoid taking care of your smile. If you’re worried about paying for your crown, ask your dentist about maximizing your insurance benefits and whether they have any financing options available.
