Champagne on New Year's Eve

Everyone wants to have a healthy smile, but many people don’t take all the steps they need to have one. Fortunately, the start of the new year is a great time to take steps to better yourself. Whether you are planning on spending an extra day at the gym each week, eating healthier, or are going to be doing one act of kindness each day, these are all excellent ways to improve yourself both mentally and physically. But don’t leave your oral health behind! Here are some ideas for New Year’s resolutions that will help you to achieve a healthy smile.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Approximately one third of Americans do not see a dentist as often as they would like to. There are many different reasons why this could be happening. Whether you’ve been skipping your checkups because of a busy work schedule or you simply keep forgetting to schedule an appointment, there is no better time to get back on track. Give your dentist a call to book your next cleaning and checkup. Don’t forget to schedule your next visit before you leave the practice.

Floss More Frequently

You cannot hide a lack of flossing from your dentist or hygienist. Even though brushing is helpful at removing plaque and food debris from your mouth, it isn’t enough on its own. There are some areas of your mouth that the bristles of your toothbrush can’t quite reach. That is why flossing is necessary for cleaning between the teeth and beneath the gumline. Place a container of floss next to your toothpaste or set up a reminder on your smartphone so that it doesn’t slip your mind.

Don’t Use Tobacco Products

Along with being the cause of overall health issues, tobacco products are harmful for your smile. In fact, smoking doubles your risk for gum disease and is linked to oral cancer. This habit can be particularly difficult for many to give up, so it is important that you find a healthier replacement activity for when the cravings kick in. Speak with your doctor, friends, and family members about the best ways that you can quit for good.

Limit Your Sugar Intake

Occasional sweets are usually okay, but if you are constantly eating them throughout the day, your teeth may pay the price. Buy fewer sugary sweets when you go grocery shopping and find other things that will satisfy the craving. For example, if you enjoy having a can of cola with your lunch, try trading it for a crisp sparkling water instead. Instead of having hard candies, have a piece of sugar-free gum.

Have Tooth-Friendly Foods

The good news is that not all of your favorite foods are harmful for your smile. Some foods are actually beneficial for your dental health. Try adding in a few extra healthy foods into your diet. Dairy products contain plenty of calcium and are therefore excellent for your teeth and bones. Have a glass of milk or a cup of yogurt for breakfast. Cheese, apples, carrots, pears, celery, cranberries, and almonds are also great snacks to munch on.

To set your smile up for success in 2021, try some of these New Year’s resolutions. That way, you can go throughout the year without having to worry about spending extra time in the dental chair to have issues resolved.
