Toothless Truths: 3 Reasons to Schedule Routine Checkups

Dentures are the tried-and-true solution for tooth loss because they’re a versatile way to replace some or all of your missing teeth. Whether you require a full or partial set, your dentist can provide a customized restoration designed to look and feel as lifelike as possible, allowing you to eat, speak, and smile confidently.

However, some patients with complete dentures assume that because they have no natural teeth remaining, there’s no need to schedule routine checkups with their provider. Read on to learn 3 convincing reasons not to skip your next standard appointment despite your missing teeth!

Reason #1: Prevent Gum Disease

Even if you have no pearly whites remaining in your mouth, you must visit your dentist every six months for a routine checkup to prevent common concerns, such as gum disease.

For example, your dentures rely on a firm suction with your connective tissues to remain securely in place throughout the day. That gives any bacteria trapped between them and your gums ample time to thrive. If they penetrate the tissues, the resulting infection can trigger aches and inflammation that make it uncomfortable to wear your restoration.

Fortunately, this can be prevented with regular dental appointments to maintain your dental health. Regular exams allow your provider to monitor your oral health to catch and treat any areas of concern before they can progress.

Reason #2: Allow for Adjustments

Did you know that your jawbone starts to thin after tooth loss? Under normal circumstances, your roots stimulate new bone growth to keep your jaw active and healthy each time you bite down. When they go missing, you can potentially lose up to 25% of the surrounding density within the first year.

As it thins, your dentures, which are designed to fit snugly, eventually become destabilized. You’ll need your dentist’s help to reline them periodically to maintain a proper fit. They can also let you know when it might be time to consider replacing worn-down dentures with a new set.

Reason #3: Maintain Your Restoration

Your restoration isn’t made up from the same organic material as your teeth and won’t develop cavities. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s completely invincible. For instance, eating anything too hard or crunchy could potentially chip the artificial teeth or damage the base. Furthermore, although they resist stains better than natural enamel, prolonged or repeated exposure to darkly tinted foods and drinks can eventually leave them looking worse for wear.

Thankfully, your dentist can professionally clean your dentures during routine visits to remove more recent discoloration. They might also offer other services as needed, such as dental bonding to repair minor cracks.

Your oral health includes more than just your teeth, which is why it’s in your best interests to continue visiting your dentist twice annually, regardless of how many have gone missing!
