There’s nothing worse than settling into bed, only for a throbbing toothache to keep you wide awake. While a nighttime toothache can feel unbearable, there are ways to ease the pain enough to get some much-needed rest. Remember, these tips aren’t a cure—just temporary relief. You should still call your emergency dentist first thing in the morning to treat the underlying issue.

Here’s what to do if you have a toothache and want to sleep through the night.

Take Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

One of the simplest ways to relieve a toothache is to take a painkiller such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. These medications help reduce inflammation and dull the pain, making it easier to fall asleep. Be sure to follow the dosage instructions on the label, and avoid aspirin for children or teens unless advised by a doctor.

Sleep with Your Head Elevated

Lying flat can cause blood to rush to your head, which may worsen the throbbing sensation in your tooth. Try propping yourself up with an extra pillow or sleeping in a recliner to keep your head elevated. This can help reduce pressure and inflammation, easing discomfort during the night.

Apply a Cold Compress

Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and swish it gently in your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. This simple rinse can soothe sore gums and ease irritation around the tooth.

Use Clove Oil for Temporary Relief

Clove oil is a time-tested home remedy with natural numbing properties. Dab a small amount onto a cotton ball and gently apply it to the painful tooth or gums. Be careful not to use too much—clove oil is potent and can cause irritation if overapplied. You can also look for over-the-counter oral gels that contain clove oil or benzocaine.

Avoid Trigger Foods Before Bed

If you’re dealing with a toothache, avoid eating sugary, acidic, or hard foods at night. These can worsen sensitivity and aggravate the problem. Stick to soft, bland foods if you need to eat before bed, and avoid very hot or cold beverages.
